Our Sunday obligation and Which Mass should we attend?
The Questions
- Knowing what happens now in Novus Ordo Masses, should Catholics continue to attend these Masses or avoid them completely?
- What about the Sunday Obligation?
- What if the distance to the Traditional Latin Mass is too far, must I go there every Sunday?
- Why not just go to the local Novus Ordo Mass?
No faithful Catholic should have to go to worship and trample on God. The truth is you don't have to go to Mass if the reason is legitimate.
- Is sacrilege not a legitimate reason not to go to these Masses?
- But what about the obligation?
HOW DOES THE CHURCH COMMAND us to worship God on Sunday? The Church commands us to worship God on Sunday by assisting at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. 1. The obligation of Mass is binding on all persons who have attained the use of reason; that is, including children seven years old. Those who find it impossible, or very difficult, to hear Mass, are excused. The sick, the very aged and infirm, and those engaged in works of necessity at the hour of Mass, are excused from attending it. Those who live too far to walk and have no conveyance are also excused. Very bad weather may be sufficient excuse.

If Catholics wish to avoid partaking in sacrilege; this is a legitimate reason not to attend Mass, providing they are unable to travel long distances to the nearest exclusive TLM church.
How to avoid sacrilege:
- Stop attending the Novus Ordo Mass.
- Attend only the exclusive Traditional Latin Mass (not mixed with Novus Ordo Mass) churches.
- If unable to attend the TLM with a legitimate excuse, keep your Sunday holy, through prayers, the rosary, reading sacred scriptures, penance, etc. at home.
- Move closer to TLM exclusive church.
- If uncertain about what to do, find the closest TLM church and contact the traditional priest for guidance, preferably an SSPX priest. (Other TLM groups may say going to either Mass is ok. Suggesting that is not your fault - while still choosing to partake in the practice of sacrilege.)
This is not to say don't go to Mass. Go to Mass! But go exclusively to a TLM church. Avoid the sacrilege. Some traditional families are willing to travel hours to get to a TLM church every Sunday. It may seem like a lot of effort, but it's really a blessing.
Let us not forget:
"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind." - Luke 10:27
